I do not agree though that woman are underrepresented in gaming and neither does Anita as it seems, she is however trying to change as you said how woman are represented in gaming and if she kept how woman are represented sexually in games I would have agreed with her, (We have problems in games when it comes to this) but when she talked about how woman should not be dansal in distresses ( Which if I am not mistaken was her first video ) I had to disagree with her. One has to also see the real world for this, Woman are weaker than men in physical strenght and so therefore they require more protection and so if we take video games as physical extensions I don't see how this can change. |
Yes, women are physically weaker than men, that is (generally) true, but I don't think that necessarily equates to them needing more protection since most fights in video games aren't really a battle of who is phsically stronger.
However, I think Anita Sarkeesian is trying to make the case that the way women are represented in games has implications in the real world. This is probably the most controversial aspect of her argument since a lot of people will say its just games, its not that serious, but I'm not a woman, I can't really say if these things have an affect, I can only listen. I've seen women say that it doesn't bother them at all, but I have also seen other woman who say that it is a problem. Which group is right and which is wrong? Who is to say they aren't both right?
If I had any criticism of Sarkeesian it would be that she doesn't spend much time addressing positive portayals of women in gaming. She would do well to not just give examples of the negative but to also maybe make sepereate episodes that talk about what portrayals she has enjoyed. On her channel she does this for movies and tv so I'm not sure why she doesn't do the same for games.
