How does it seem to you (English soccer fans) when you watch a team, English in this case, play with a player like Fernando?
He's a defensive midfielder, his primary purpose is to destroy the opponents plays, recover the ball and aid the defenders. If the team is balanced forward he can join up to help if he's skilled enough.
