I'd say it's more like an honest opinion.  

"Battling for attention" doesn't make much sense to me.  That's like "We should get rid of the square button because it is battling for attention with the stick.  You can't use both at the same time so we don't need both."

The square button isn't battling for attention with the stick because the stick has a completely different purpose from the buttons. The touchpad is either being used as a button or for the same thing the sticks are already being used for so in that sense it is battling for attention.
