I'll put it this way, Any game where you have to move an onscreen character through 3d space is almost certainly going to use the left analog stick more than the d-pad. So it follows that you would want the left analog stick in a more dominant position than the d-pad.

For me the analog position is confortable since I use it for 15 years and even after 16h sessions no pain. Having the d-pad below would probably make me more awkward  in the games I like.
