The answer is simple.
1. Last gen lasted way too long which built up high demand for new consoles.
2. Wii U, even with it's year head start failed to impress the core crowd. While more casual gamers just thought it was an add-on.
3. Microsoft left a bad taste in gamers mouths with their original pre 180 policies.
4. Sony knocked it out of the park during their 2013 E3 presentation. Less restrictions and $100 cheaper price tag really was the knock out blow.
5. Resolution gate. This is really more relevant to the core crowd, but the core crowd are the ones that get the hype going for a console. Once word of mouth spread that the PS4 had the better looking versions of multiplats and was $100 cheaper than the XB1 it just made sense that the average gamer choose the PS4 as their console of choice. In the end multiplats are what the vast majority of gamers play. Exclusives are great as well, but they tend not to be as important as they once were.
