That's a really good article which I enjoyed throughout. There a few more stuff I'd like to add though...

Playstation 4 plays it safe and allegedly the least innovative console of this generation, but I need to disagree. There are many innovations coming up with it, but these are all still GAME BOUND and non-interfering less radical changes.

Let's remember people are not against innovations but they usually oppose radical changes that are hardly of any use...

For example, voice commands are innovative but most people end up never using them, which proves to be gimmicky. Or the "snap" feature in XB1 is also mostly a gimmick because people usually use XB1 for gaming and for occasional media consumption. They already have multitasking computers, tablets, and smart phones lying around.

However, a feature like minimal installation time which allows to you play games almost instantly and installs as it plays is a very useful, convenient and welcome change (I can't see anyone against it). Remember it usually takes no more than 20-30 seconds to have the initial installation on PS4 versus 15-20 min on XB1

Similarly I am yet to see a negative comment about the design changes on DS4. The touchpad, the share button and the wireless charging toucpad are all welcome additions (although battery life may be improved).

Similarly instant twitch game streaming is a fantastic addition. Including idle power auto updates thanks to dedicated arm chip and other hardware is also very convenient innovation.

We can also count many innovations (in the console world) from a developer perspective as well (such as unified extremely fast memory, x86 APU architecture GPGPU etc..)...

Basically PS4 is no short on innovation but to the contrary, it's probably the most innovative Sony console to date. It's just that none of those innovations cause a radical change on gameplay, but rather play on a smoother, more convenient and better gameplay experience.

Basically PS4 is just a much better gaming machine and your overall idea may only swing to the other side only if you're looking for "not just a gaming machine".
