Digimon I did forget about though. I still feel like it's "not a chance in hell", but that petition is doing the rounds I guess. I suppose if you'd have asked me a year ago whether I thought Sword Art Online; Oreshika & Mind=0 would release in the west I'd have said "absolutely not" yet here we are, so you never know.
As for whether niche publishers will support it beyond 2015, absolutely they will. You have to think: what sales targets do these publisher have? Most of them target tiny demographics of gamers. So, for example, 3DS may have a much bigger userbase than Vita in the west, but are they the type of users who are likely to buy games like Conception 2 (which is the kind of stuff these localization houses bring over?) NPD showed us that no, actually more Vita owners bought these games. Besides, these companies need cheaply-licenced Japanese games to bring across in the first place. At the moment, Vita is getting this support in Japan. PS4 might take a little bit of that support, but no more so than PS3 is already taking from Vita, and we still get plenty of stuff. And in addition, I think the release of PlayStation TV is only going to strengthen the position. Now the gamers that these niche publishers target have a choice between playing these games on a home console and playing on a handheld. I know for a fact, from the NISA forums, that there are some users who wouldn't buy a Vita to play these games but would buy a PS TV to play them. Finally, is the situation actually going to get any worse? Vita is selling just above 10k a month in the biggest gaming market in the world. Yet the localizations keeps coming. Last Aksys announcements? Arcana Heart 3 & Tokyo Twilight Ghosthunters. Last NISA announcement? Hotaru no Nikki and Criminal Girls. So I'm not worried about losing the localization houses keeping the stuff coming beyond 2015. As long as it's coming in Japan, it'll keep coming to the west. |
I hope so too.. right now Vita is my main gameing device, and I don't have interest on buying a PS4 until next year or so when some strong fighting games release (mainly tekken and hoping for Soul Calibur announcement soon).. But I can't help but be a little negative about it.. I hope TGS is as awesome as last year so I can sleep happy one more year without caring for western support on the Vita.
