There isn't a unique rule, each game and franchise is a complex system and each variable must be correctly weighted to extract a function of costs and benefits.
Oversimplifying, receiving a large sum just for a timed exclusive is probably the sole win-win situation, but for every other it's much more difficult to tell.
And obviously there's always the possibility of mistakes in calculations and predictions.
