Well the difference would be honesty. If you are lying that calls into question everything you've said and puts more suspicion on you. If you are telling the truth then that would take any suspicion off you. In my eyes at least. However I don't discount the possibility that smeags is simply being dishonest in which case the only way we would know for sure is if he is attacked during the night.
