If it was truly just hype, people would be disappointed within a couple of months, then switch to another console, the one you THINK is better. No, the reason the PS4 is selling so well is because of the PS brand and how it delivers each gen. It also helps that the PS4 is the most powerful console this gen and launched at a good price. |
Oh Come on, hype is unedniably a huge part of it. I refuse to believe that the casual consumer is splashing out 400 to play a slightly prettier version of Watchdogs.
All of those things you highlighed merely contribute towards the hype, consoles are long term investments and alot of people are anticipating greatness and I think that warrants their purchase.. The 7 year cycle has also clearly created a huge appetite for newness amongst core gamers.
As far as people expressing dissapointment, we've aleady seen that and Yoshida been prompted numerous times to defend the lack of big games on the PS4 and he just points to 3rd party cross gen titles. Ultimately though, 9months isn't that long in context of a consoles lifecycle. I really doubt the PS4 could sustain its current sales for much more then a year without having to seriously up its game in terms software. Luckily 2015's lineup is looking incredible.
