Even as a fan of shield, the gun seems to work well and not unbalanced at all, with the purpose of stunning over anything else.
Also the healing fuction seems damn amazing, the game try to make you really think in each action you wanna do to suit better the situation you are, seems a really good evolution to the gameplay was focused into Bloodborne, maybe this is what they mean when they say they want it to not to punish the player, giving it more choices and functions to work with, not making the game easy at all.

The healing thing is damn nifty.  It rewards offensive play.  It looks so much like the Souls games, yet there is a subtle difference in philosophy.  It's like it's trying to be more fun and dynamic but still force the player to be smart about their strategy.  At the same time, it also gives the player more chances to screw up and make the wrong decision--which is actually a good thing.
