Sony should say "We CAN'T buy exclusivity."

Sony used to buy up exclusives ALL the time. Why else was Grand Theft Auto released on PS2 months before PC and Xbox? GTAIII wasn't even released on Xbox til 2 years later.

And of course, Sony bought console exclusivity for Tomb Raider II and III in the 90s.

This all changed with the PS3's outrageous costs. Neat fact: GTAIV was also supposed to be timed exclusive for the PS3, as well as Assassin's Creed but Sony couldn't afford it.

If the PS3 didn't destroy Sony in terms of finance (say, PS3 used generic PowerPC processor like Xbox One and a crappier Blu-ray player) it could've possibly afforded more exclusives.

You need to brush up on your console history. Tomb Raider wasn't on the N64 because the system used cartidges as its medium. They were expensive and carried a lot less space than the CD format. The Sega Saturn was a pain in the arse to develop for. It was basically the PS3 of that generation, only that it suffered as much worse fate. Sony didn't need to buy exclusivity to Tomb Raider at all because they didn't need to try.

No, Sony did buy exclusitivy.

They could have put a (weaker) version on the N64 if they wanted to.

"Sony Computer Entertainment America Signs Exclusive Deal with Eidos for Tomb Raider Franchise; Lara Croft Videogames to Be Exclusive to the PlayStation for Game Consoles"

Sony did the EXACT same thing in the 90s that MS did today. There is nothing wrong with it.

Signing a deal =/= Paying wads of cash. Sony had a much better relationship with devs at that time, especially when the PS1 was developer friendly.

MS, on the other hand, threw wads of cash just so RoTR won't come out on the PS4. Just because the situations look similar on the surface, doesn't mean that at the core, they're the same. MS was obviously threatened by 1.) the PS4's growing userbase and 2.) Uncharted 4. Sony was not threatened by either the Saturn or N64 because they weren't doing so well. Huge difference.

And MS actually shot themselves on the foot because they inadvertently increased potential Uncharted 4 sales now RoTR no longer directly competes with it.
