From how the PR speak is going, looks like SE had a gag order on the announcement if the timed nature if the exclusivity. MS gauged the reactions and saw the negative press (minor as it is) and probably decided that they could not afford even the slightest negative publicity at this point and just went ahead and indirectly announced it themselves to score some positive PR points.
That's just a theory, of course. But it seems to sound that way to me.
