The real question is if console manufacturers think it works and apparently they do. Even though it's hardly quantifiable but it also doesn't seem to have too many negative effects.

PS1 did well while moneyhatting. PS2 didn't need it and XB probably didn't want to. PS2 dominated and XB laid a good foundation. X360 had a successful gen while moneyhatting.

 I think what we can take away from it is that no one has gotten bankrupt because of moneyhatting so it will probably continue. It doesn't harm but it puts your console on a pedestal. So yeah, in the end it might be worth it.
