TL;DR
Skylanders sold over 100 million figures in about 16 months.
Skylanders figure attach rates were beyond Activision's wildest expectations.
72 million children are interested in smart toys, amiibo chief among them.
Nintendo is willing to work with third parties on amiibo content.
With all of that information it looks like the amiibo is a hell of a tool for Nintendo. Provided the amiibo does well, even half as well as Skylanders, I bet that at very least the big Japanese games devs return. It's no secret collectables are big sellers in Japan, and Nintendo claims they can make amiibos as big or small as they want. Just imagine how well a line of Square-Enix key chain sized amiibo would sell in Japan. Say what you want about the decline of Japanese devs, but SE, Capcom, Konami, and Sega have some iconic mascots/characters that would sell amiibo even if they weren't capable of being used with the Wii U.
Chocobos, Moogles, Black Mages, Magitek, Street Fighters, Megaman, Dark Stalkers, Felynes, any MH bosses, Phoenix Wright, Sonic, Shinobi, Hatsune Miku, Snake, Rex, Ray, Cyborg Raiden, ZoE, Gradius, Belmonts, Yu-Gi-Oh, etc.
Bonus, with high attach rates for smart toys, even though third party games sell relatively poorly on Nintendo consoles, they could still be disproportionately profitable.
