More like the Resident Evil series going downhill after Shinji Mikami left the team, and company. The sudden switch to turn the series into an action, over from survival I feel hurt the appeal for the series much more than changing controls ever could.
Also, not many of the newer survival horror games measure up to RE of the old. Maybe Dead Space 1, Alan Wake (to a lesser extent) and a few other titles that use with modern controls. But honestly, I think that has more to do with publishers and devs mostly not wanting to make these types of games. And the genre not being that popular among the video games audiences these days.
