I honestly think the WIi U shouldn't be discontinued till the normal 5 year cycle. No matter if it fails. If Nintendo starts doing this. This will start a problem they won't get out of. That's how 3rd party games nonsense started on Nintendo. Nintendo was arrogant, the system was underpowered, or had some sort of limit. No one really brought real stuff to the systems. Fans got use to not buying anything from those companies. 3rd Parties gave up. Then fans just give up on Nintendo.
If they relase the new system. People will get mad. And just wait on the next system because they don't want to switch. Or even cause a loss of loyal Nintendo fans. Then for what? When the next PS and Xbox come out. The new system is already old and out of date even more.

DS came out a mere 3.5 years after GBA and it went on to sell over 150 million and is the best selling Nintendo product ever.
360 came out 4 years after Xbox and went on to sell over 80 million and nearly quadruple its predeccessor.
Releasing a new device a bit earlier than expected doesnt hurt ur brand, what Sega did was completely different because they released multiple devices a few years apart and barely supported any of them.

You got me there. But a fumbling system will have the higher risk of pissing people off. I didn't buy a DS till DS lite. A lot of people ignored the DS till the revision.

Well, chances are that if you are cutting a system's lifespan short by a considerable time period, there's going to be more of the market that you aren't pissing off. Although at the same time, you aren't going to win over that market if you make a reputation out of it, Nintendo have (arguably) only done this with the Virtual Boy and GBA Micro, very sporadic occurrences, which quite frankly takesa lot of prompting to make people remember those things in the first place.
And to be fair, the DS Lite coincided perfectly with NSMB. It was basically a whole different system looking from the outside in for a lot of people.

Then you could argue the DS Lite was the real start of the system. I know that's dumb though lol. If Wii U is ended in 2016. I might buy the next system right there. But They gotta show me something that is actually useful in all regards. The Wii U tablet, to me is the Wii Remote speaker on that.
