The steam stats have always been skewed towards laptops, low end laptop gpu's being the most common is proof of that, it isn't that laptops are the biggest portion of gaming platforms mind, its just that pretty much anyone with a laptop as well as a PC will install steam on their laptop, too.

more often than not, laptops usually run around 1366x768, so there you go.

It's like comparing games purchased on psn/xbox live to the total number of accounts, rather than the total number of active or subscribed (ps+/xbl) accounts, you'll just end up with a horribly skewed result from all the empty/idle/useless accounts, just like using the steam survey data will just get you a whole bunch of laptop data.

Personally I wish they'd use GPU/CPU data to divide the stats up between desktop and laptop, would make for much more accurate results.
