I'd say it was more the fact that Microsoft agreed on Insomniac owning the IP rather than the money thrown at them.

I think that they said something about this in the past.  I guess Sony just assumed that they would have the upper hand since they have such a longstanding relationship and got a little to greedy and wanted rights to the IP.  I'd also assume that MS offered a lot more money though.
