I can say I preferred the Gothic system, especially the first two games...for a couple reasons:
1. Enemies did not level with you. This created a strong sense of danger if you wander off the beaten path and run into an enemy you aren't strong enough to fight yet.
2. When you levelled a specific skill (one handed swords, for instance), you actually got better at it. Not just doing more damage, but the sword flowed more smoothly. It was easier to set up combos. Stuff like that. When you start out as an inexperienced fighter, you held your one handed weapon with two hands and were very clumsy with it. For some reason, this did not carry over to Gothic 3.
