Well, isn't the "machines" part something of a misnomer? Aren't they really biological in origin? Modified enzymes, proteins, and the like? In that sense, they are totally feasible. However, if they're used as a catch-all to fix plot holes then ... yeah.
Also, isn't faster than light travel based on acceleration pretty much impossible?
