Um... what's the distinction between having a reason to exist, and being needed? o.O I mean, technically speaking, NO videogame is 'needed,' but if it makes the company that releases it money, AND has plenty people who are happy with the purchase, then it's more or less fulfilled its purpose. I could argue that this keeps the people that didn't have a PS3, but now own a PS4, need this so they won't have to ALSO buy a PS3 just to try it. The people who owned it before, and are buying it for the new system, are icing on the cake, and while you're right that they don't need it, they pretty clearly WANT it.
Nobody 'needs', what, a seventh (9th or 10th, counting the non-FPS ones?) Halo game at aaaaall, (Talking about Halo 5 here, not Halo MCC) or a 7th God of War game, but Microsoft makes money, Sony makes money, and there are plenty of people who will want it, and be happy they bought it, so boom, their existence is validated.
TL;DR: No videogame is needed. (...except maybe Half Life 3. T____T )
