I am going to assume that you have seen the video that was released today about solid snake looking like altair from assasins creed.
My theory is that old snake and the entire battle happening is a VR mission similiar to assasins creed. We have seen many videos where old snake puts a gun in his mouth. Now assuming he pulls the trigger I could see the screen fade to black and you are young snake agian and the real plot takes off. This could explain why we have only seen the middle eastern setting because if they revealed too much itd give the plot away. I have no source to base this off of other than before mgs2's release no one new anything about raiden. All footage shown of mgs2 was of solid snake, even in areas where you play as raiden. The main thing that I feel debunks this theory is the whole ocelot speech though. I know im pulling at strings and it most likely wont happen but if things play out as my theory ypu'll know who called it.
