Ok, so hear me out. After seeing the videos showing the way your lvl after 20 I am convinced that they will never raise the EXP cap past 20. There is just no way to do it will out throwing the system out of whack. I mean what would they do Stop your Mote of light lvl and go back to exp lvl till you hit new cap? IMO the exp in Destiny will always be the phase that new players are introduced into the game. Once you hit 20, now your in and you can lvl for real, with your gear.
So here is my theory. There is no hard cap. How ever I think the current endgame gear will reach a point where it would take weeks to lvl and around the point people are nearing that Destiny will drop DLC, that DLC will have new gear tied to new missions in new locations. That gear will either have more Motes of Light allowing you to lvl faster and reach new heights. Maybe there wont be motes of light, maybe it will be motes of fire(or whatever you want to call your mote) which cause you to lvl 3X as fast or something, or gear will give X amount of light and some fire either way, the way I see them increasing the "level cap" is by bring new gear that makes it easier to lvl, up to the next "soft cap".
Its an awesome premise that no other MMO (or RPGFPSMMO like Destiny) has even tried. Other MMOs you race to the next lvl cap to you get the access to endgame gear. This way in destiny you "lvl" will always mean something. I love this idea because once you hit 20 you will never find a piece of gear you can't wear, because if you find a piece of gear that is a huge increase that means you defeated a mission, strike, raid or whatever that means you are worthy to wear it, and you will need that gear to lvl faster and beat new missions you could not even attempt successfully before (because you were too weak)
There is no trading system or auction house so this would work. They wont have new players getting to 20 fast then buying or having friends give them near end game gear.
edit- adding this link which Bungie explains the post lvl 20 lvling system.
