Im not sure what you mean with Mini-series? Ill try and explain the way KI has been released though
KI released in November as a digital only title with six characters. Then in February (catn remeber the exact months so sorry if im wrong) they released Spinal. In March they released Fulgore, Story mode, and lobbies making it 8 characters for the first season.
However it was always planned for at least two seasons so this holiday they will be releasing another 8 characters. Its a AA game so KI fits perfectly into the digital format which has been praised as being very successful.
The retail version youre seeing in the OP is for the First 8 characters + TJ Combo which is a part of Season 2. The thing is, you can buy the characters individually or just buy Season 2 entirely for $20. Look at the characters as DLC.
So as an example you buy the retail version for season 1 and then buy season 2 as dlc making it $40. Or you can just buy it digitally for the same price which will also come out to be $40. However if you dont want all the characters then you can just buy individual characters for $5 a piece.

By mini-series, when people were saying Season 1&2, I thought there was going to be some kind of animated show telling the deep lore of Killer Instinct. And that you could get the retail version of the game with a DVD of Season 1 of the show for $19.99, with Jago in the game and the rest of the cast as optional DLC. I then thought TJ Combo was going to be the main character of Season 2 and release with a second retail version for $19.99 with Jago and the other optional characters as DLC.
