I used to think it was because they were Japanese, but then Sony would have to be the same. Then again would could argue Sony is focused on the west which is why they are different from Nintendo. But Sony is not the only Japanese company that has no problem with online, not even one of a small group. A lot of Japanese developers offer online just like the western ones do. So what could be it?
The only logical explanation is the ones running Nintendo don't fully grasp the concept, which brings us back to that idiot Iwata who doesn't want to let go no matter how bad the company performs under his command.
