It would be nice to have online co-op -- more features are always better -- but this doesn't influence my decision to buy at all. I prefer local co-op anyway.

Plus it's not like Nintendo doesn't support online multiplayer. Mario Kart, Smash Bros., heck, Splatoon is advertised as an online multiplayer shooter.

The main reason I was going to potentially purchase the game was to play with my brother, who lives about 900 miles away.  Impossible to local co-op that one.

I know that Nintendo has gotten better about having online multiplayer facets in their games.  However, in this day and age, it is infuriating to see that they aren't making it a standard the way the other big 2 game companies are.  I get that they believe the best multiplayer experience is in the same living room, but reality is that the option isn't always there for that.

That's fair. My best friend lives in Florida so online play is the only way we can play, so I understand your frustration.

In general, though, I'm a fan of Nintendo's multiplayer philosophy. Local multiplayer, outside of the Nintendo ecosystem, has been slowly dying for two generations. I'm glad the company is keeping it alive, even if it means a dearth of online functionality.
