The Xbox One doesn't have the advantages that the PS3 needed to come back. PS3 had bluray, WiFi from day one, free online, was known for being more powerful, and had a stronger first party. The Xbox One and PS4 are way more similar. They both cost the same, imo ps4 still has a stronger and more varied first party, they both have subscription costs, PS4 substantially more powerful. Every advantage the PS3 had and needed to come back the Xbox One doesn't have. It'll be very interesting to see how it turns out but I'm not sure rehashing the whole Halo and Gears formula will work this gen. Microsoft need to make games instead of getting third parties to do so because eventually these "exclusives" will end up on PlayStation platforms, Titanfall is already going to fall victim to this, dead rising 4 may do, heck even sunset overdrive 2 may come to PS4. Microsoft need to dramatically change.

You forgot the other big factor, brand preference in most of the world. The brand preference for PS remains and isn't something MS can overcome in this generation. Which is why even if MS does everything right from here on their recovery Xb one still won't get close to PS4. it requires Sony do do something monumentally dumb, like introduce DRM mid generation, to ruin their reputation and open the way for Xb one (or Wii U) to come through.
