Well, then your simple explanation was so simple it ended up becoming complicated.

And tehir characters, while a seemingly good excuse, isn't reason enough for their design appraoch. Especially when you look at Zelda. And look at sunset overdrive. its cartoony no doubt but looks more dense and simulated than any mario game. nintendo tries to use a minimalist clean design language to hide their hardware limitations. Actually thats not a good way to put it, lets say to play to the strenghts of their hardware.
