Because games don't start out with a score of 10 and then get deductions.  They start out at 0 and earn their way up to a 10 or whatever.  Gamestop just didn't think the last of us was worth more than 8.  And I can tell you first hand that if you were not a huge fan of the genre or the story, you could very easily give this game an 8 or less.  How many times can one do the same ladder/plank/raft puzzle before he goes insane?  :P

LOL thats less then 1% of the game..cheery picking hyperbole. The melee, stealth, survival (especially on hard and higher) gameplay is fantastic along with amazing story and characters. It deserves it's praise. every game can be downplayed with terrible cherry picked arguments like yours.
