The process was slower and way less efficient.

Before the business guy had to go to his home or the office to check the the email, if an emergency comes out, he would have to wait longer periods of times to respond. Before this was done with a simple call, but what if the problem at hand needs a file? you have to send it via email.

Another example, let's say you have a big important interview with a client, but because of traffic you can reach the office in time, so you use Skype on your phone and have the interview.

Another, you connect to a server via remote access and again you are in a stuck in traffic, you can connct with your phone to that remote server and start working.

Can't a laptop be used for most if not all of that as well though?

Besides those are only in certain cases, for the majority of people an iphone wouldn't be necessary.

Is more convenient to use the phone. Laptops can hold delicate information. I for example work as a software developer, all my project files are in the office's laptop, all that information is stored there; if the laptop gets stolen or it breaks outside of the office I can lose some of my work, with the phone I don't lose anything since I'm only accessing the info online.

That's why I said at first "for some people". Most teenagers don't really need a smartphone, but in today's world, a business man definitely needs it.
