Or are you saying that Nintendo didn't infact create IPs like Eternal Darkness, Geist, Golden Sun etc? Even Mario Sports games were made by 3rd parties (Next Level Games/Camelot). Hell, Camelot even created one of Nintendo's characters. |
Sony bought them after Motorstorm first released. If Motorstorm failed, then Sony would have never bought the developer and you can say the same thing for everyone else they acquired. In most cases developers apporach Sony with game ideas, etc and Sony funds the title and has a studio (usually Santa Monica in NA, Xdev in Europe, Japan Studio in JP) oversee development.
With Nintendo it's almost always the other way around; they typically farm projects out. Golden Sun and Geist are anomalies. Nintendo signed Silicon Knights to a publishing/exclusivity deal so they own the Eternal Darkness IP. They didn't really "farm" the game out but they still owned the copyright, and just because Iwata didn't specifically tell them to make the game doesn't mean it's not their game.
Nintendo's ownership of the name is part of the reason Dyak named the next game Shadow of the Eternals instead of ED2.
But anyway here is an article that somewhat talks about Next Level Games' relationship with Nintendo.
