I disagree. It is slightly overrated, but it was a very solid FF in all respects. The story wasn't groundbreaking but got the job done. Gameplay mechanics are what you can expect from a turn based RPG with a few new tricks here and there; leveling up system was flexible; graphics were great for its time as well voice acting even though now it sounds terrible, no one cared back then. It's a very decent FF and does the job very well, but not the best FF.

I've made a thread about this.  Final Fantasy 13 isn't any good either, but one thing 13 gets bashed about is the game is nothing but a long stretch of hallways.  Final Fantasy 10 is also a long stretch of hallways, sure there's towns, but the game is pretty much one long hallway.  Remember that road as soon as you get out of Luca?  Between the random battles, stopping from the sections of storyline, etc, it's a 10-20 minute trip on the exact same screen until you get to the next screen.  Just walking along a single direction.

Squaresoft tried to do something unique with the battle system, something that's actually worked well with other games, but the way Squaresoft implemented it, it's just boring.  Wakka's sphere grid takes him through being more accurate, so he's the only one that can hit fast flying enemies regularly, Tidus' sphere grid makes him accurate and okay strength, making him better for the fast ground enemies with more hp, Lulu for elemental enemies, Auron for heavy damage, Rikku can one hit kill mechanical enemies with steal.  Yuna as a white mage, Kimhari can go through any path he wants, but following Wakka, Tidus, or Auron's path really is the most effective way to level him.  This is all through the regular game. 

Every single battle ends up being monotonous.  Encounter rate on the game is high and you get in a random encounter.  You switch characters to whichever one will one hit kill the enemy and battle is over.  In attempts to be efficient, you will rarely ever take Yuna out in combat because there's really no need.  But guess what?  If the character doesn't take a turn in combat, they get no experience.  What about the areas you go through and have absolutely no use for using a character, or what about Kimahri when he's just an alternative for one of the other three attackers?  So not only are the battles change character, attack, change character, attack, change character, attack, change character, attack, repeat, but you've got to throw efficiency out the window and when only one enemy remains, switch characters, defend, switch characters, defend, until every character atleast takes part in the battle so they can gain experience.  Otherwise, Yuna would be close to her starting sphere grid level by the time you reach Guadosalam.  

So you're going point A to B until you receive the airship later in the game, change characters attack, change characters attack, change characters defend several times, then change characters and attack the last remaining enemy, all while the sphere grid itself is a leveling system that slows you down even more.  They pretty much used the sphere grid in Final Fantasy 13 as well, the chrystarium system. The problem with the sphere grid is that each path gives stats and skills based off another class.  You can break into other grids and start leveling up as another class, but by doing so, you're severely decreasing the power of your current character.  It's only until you reach end game and you've maxed out each characters own path that it's even worth jumping onto another characters path.  So the sphere grid that allows you to customize your character, blah blah blah, bs?  No.  Even that's point A to B, just like  the games world map.
