8 bit, 16 bit, they're mostly 2D platformers and they rarely branch out. For every 1 non 2D platformer, there are 10 2D platformer. I'm talking about small games. Let's discuss it inthis perspective games smaller than 1/2GB and the ones over it. Metroidvania style, Mario style how many times have you heard these expressions to describe small games in the past 5 years? |
Okay, firstly, "indie" does not mean "small games". It simply refers to a game made by a developer who is financially independent. There are further arguments as to whether the game is still indie if it is then picked up by Sony or Microsoft etc.
Secondly, here's a few of the indie games coming to PS4 in the near future...
Transistor
Sure it's 2D, but those visuals were not possible in either the 8 or 16 bit era. It's also neither a platformer or a metroid clone.
The Witness
Neither 2D, a platformer or metroid clone.
Skulls of the Shogun
2D? Yep... 8/16 bit visuals? Nope. Platformer or Metroid clone? Nope.
Drifter
Neither 2D, retro styled or a platformer or metroid clone...
I was gonna pull a load more out... but I doubt you'd take any notice and carry on with the ignorant belief that an indie game is exclusively a poorly designed 2D platformer with retro graphics so why bother?
