For me: Final Fantasy II - Yes a NES FF game, has a much more interesting plot then many of the later entries, especially the post-game. Fire Emblem: Mystery of the Emblem - Didn't localize, but a patch is available. Remake of FE3 for SNES, but introduces a lot of game mechanics which people hail Awakening for (like Casual mode). Not as good as Awakening, but up there. Front Mission - Best SRPG of them all, strong and unique plot. Lost Odyssey - Gets some love, but deserves more. This is what FF should be. |
I have to say, I was really surprised at how involved the story was in FF2. I was expecting it to be a generic FF1 plot but it actually delivered a half decent story.
And I agree with Mystery of the Emblem, that game was a great improvement over Shadow Dragon.
OT: Honestly, I'll have to say Suikoden. Not sure if a lot of people have played the game but I had a blast with it. Other games would include Arc the Lad 2, SMT: Devil Summoner Soul Hackers, Dragon Quest 6. Also I think Chrono Cross is an interesting case. That game came out with excellent reception to it but over the years, there are Trigger fans that hate Cross but personally, I absolutely love it.
