Online only is what will hurt it. It will sell stupid amounts but for a game that they say you can play single player, to not be able to play said single player without Gold on an MS console or PS+ on PS4. For shame. I think many will take it back or exchange it straight away.

To me, RPG is a huge plus. It plays like Borderlands, and I've enjoyed that game a lot. I really don't like playing straight-up FPS with no tangible sense of progress, like most were last-gen.
Also, I believe, from how it was presented in the Beta, you don't need PS+ for single-player story missions. You can go about your own lonesome business and play through the story. Of course, you will not be able to play co-op or vs., so you'd still be missing a lot of the content. But I do believe it will not be a huge problem, and if Activision and Sony act wisely and include a free 1 month Plus subscription code in the box, there should be almost no dissatisfied customers.
Also, you don't need PS+ at all to play anything on PS3, so we might see a lot of sales on that platform as well.

The Borderlands style is what appeals to me, I really enjoyed Borderlands 2 (odd have no interest in the Pre-sequel, presume the main development team are working on #3 for the new gen).
Anyway, are you sure? If I have no internet, no paid subscription on PS4 or MS consoles I can still play just basic single player story?
I would understand due to that you couldn't do hidden MP only missions or dungeons online. I'm fine with that if it means I can play the game offline on consoles (I don't like the idea of buying a game and then having to pay more to someone else just for the privilege to play it, I've already bought the console and game). If I'm not using the online features I shouldn't have to pay more just to play a single player part.

No, I think you must be online always, but you can play single player without subscription.
