It is still very expensive for being almost 8 years old. On the back of slim and super slim and increasing the hdd-storage they (and also MS with its X360) from time to time they did not decreased the price, just gave the customer a little bit more for the same price. And as they killed the old models no one has the chance to get a cheap launch-console, which nowadays would be at 99,- probably when being compared to the current models of PS3 and X360.
When just looking at amazon.de the PS3 is about 250€. Thats incredible expensive for 8 year old console, as it is Wii launch price.
I of course dont know about the production cost but i guess they should be able to decrease the price 3 more times.
-------------------------------------
Early/Mid 2015 --> 199€
Holiday 2016 (10th birthday) --> 149€
-------------------------------------
Holiday 2017 (to clear stocks in 2018) --> 99€
-------------------------------------
I dont know if they really can go down to 99€, but at least 149€ should be possible without generating loss.
Moreover i do not know if this price cuts really have some influence - I guess it is rather a small impact on sales then.
YTD about 1.8 million PS3 have been sold. Last year Nov/Dec have been about 2 million.
For this year i take these 1.8million untill Mid july + 75% of last year sales (3.2 million) Mid July to End of year, so 4million should be OK.
Lets say this year will be 4 million PS3. --> 84.5 million
2015 maybe 3.5 million --> 88 million
2016 maybe 3 million --> 91 million
2017 maybe 2 million --> 93 million
2018 maybe 1 million --> 94 million
That would be a very very slow death and i dont expect the sales to decline so slowly, but even this would "only" manage to bring PS3 into the mid 90's numbers.
I do NOT see, how it can sell 8 million consoles more as it for sure will not sell longer than untill 2018.
So all in all Wii will stay and be Winner in terms of sales for 7th generation.
