Nintendo aren't rivals with sony pictures.

And Sony Pictures is owned by Sony, who just happen to also manufacture the biggest sales rival for Nintendo.

Just because Sony comp ent and Sony pictures are subsidaries of Sony, doesn't mean everything sony is rivals with nintendo.

Sony's gaming division and microsoft's gaming division are rivals, yes.
But the two companies, sony and microsoft, work a hell of alot together.

Windows on vaio.
Bing product placement in amazing spiderman.
Skype on vita.
Sony published music in halo 4.
much more

Same with nintendo. They rival sony's gaming division, but still work together, granted not as much as microsoft, but still.
Movies (as above)
NFC chip in wiiu pad (NFC forum founded by sony, nokia and phillips)
Minor bluray tech in the philips-developed optical drive for wii u.

Well, NFC was not all Sony, and Nintendo purposefully chose a proprietary bluray drive, so I don't see your point of them working together.

Nintendo is a very closed company that fiercly guards their IPs for the most part. I'm not saying that this is unprecedented, just interesting that they gave Sony the rights to use an iconic character in their movie.
