PS3 vs. 360 in terms of sales is almost a tie, not to say it took 8 years unlike the old 5-6 years gens, not to say that internet provided people means to fight worldwise and with a lot more of data to back them up.

SNES vs. Genesis was pretty close too, and with more frontal company attacks, but that's about it, 7th gen war surpassed 4th gen war.

Also, 6th gen didn't even had one, was a one sided massacre made by the PS2, it killed Sega, made GameCube the worst Nintendo console ever, and the newcomer Microsoft know that it had no chance with ther X shapped box.

I think "brutal" isn't all companies doing very well. "brutal" should be reserved for cuthroat tactics, which both Sony and Nintendo pulled off in 4th and 6th gen respectively.
