X1 can't hold on to second place because it's not in second place, it's in third, by a good margin. Don't know why that's so hard to fathom for most Xbox fans - it's far behind Wii U in sales, regardless of the latter releasing earlier. 
Xbox One is in third place.
It will have to outsell Wii U by a TON regularly to have any chance of overtaking it in the foreseeable future.
