I threw out a scenario in a previous post about this possibly being the last Uncharted.

A revision to my post in that thread is that by Joel helping Sully escape with the cursed treasure ( the Pandora's box containing the fungus). He finds out in TLOU2 that he was directly responsible for the outbreak, and more importantly the death of his daughter.
