I don't think its for the "reborn quicker" aspect. I took it more of if there is less than 5 seconds there will be no star K.O.'s and thus you don't have the whole you beat the guy and killed him at the last second but since he was sent flying in the background he didn't die quick enough to get credit for it.
I mean if time if running out the guy can always just wait the full 5 seconds or whatever it is on the platform before respawning. Thus I think the update is more for last second kills just counting versus getting ripped off by the K.O. taking too long.
