It's interesting looking at the numbers excluding the Nov-Dec launches of Xbox One and PS4 -

They're both trending well below PS2 / WIi, in 2014, including years we don't think of as strong for either - PS2 in 2001 - good year, but not spectacular or historic, Wii in 2007, 2010, 2011 - good years - not historic. I

PS2 in H1 07 - 1.53m

PS2 in H1 06 - 1.69m

PS2 in H1 05 - 2.48m

PS2 in H1 04 - 1.85m

PS2 in H1 03 - 2.31m

PS2 in H1 01 - 1.98m

Those were all good but not huge years - roughly 4m to 6m years.

Wii in H1 11 - 1.74m

Wii in H1 07 - 2.11m

The Wii years I've cited are similar too - and also imply 4-6m.

X360 also did 2.4m in H1 2011 - when it sold >7m for the year. So to me, overall the numbers imply about a 5m year for PS4 - strong - but not anywhere near what the launch year suggested was possible.

PS4 also has probably the least amount of "next gen only" games in console transition history.

Once Uncharted and the other big next gen only game arrive it will pick back up again. There are still many people waiting.
