You never really can tell. While my heart fully agree with you my brain comes up with numbers and scenarios that can make the PS4 dethrone its "grand dad" (PS3 was its daddy and PS1 was its great grand dad). Here is my reasoning;

  • PS2 sold as well as it did LTD cause it pretty much dominated the 6th generation. PS4 seems on track to do the same this gen. Combined sales of the GC and XB in the 6th was approx 55-60M. If that number hold true this gen to the WiiU/XB1 then the PS4 will again be the dominant platform.
  • The PS4 may not be selling as well as the PS2 was if you look at the first june(s), but the PS4 sales were heavily front loaded. The PS2 did not sell like 4M worldwide in its first 2 months.
  • PS2 also came in at a lower price, chances are when the PS4 is at $300 it will have an overall highly monthly sales baseline.
  • Yes japan is not as big now for PS4 as it was for the PS2, but now the PS4 is also going into market that it never went into with the PS2. All it has to do is sell 10M in japan, sales from the new regions should make up for it.
Thats all I got lol. I wanna believe!!!!

Gamecube shipped 21.74 million and Xbox shipped 24 million so just under 46 million between them.

Were did you get "Combined sales of the GC and XB in the 6th was approx 55-60M"?
