For me it was the Sega MAster System with Phantasy Star, a friend of mine had it and despite my reluctance (I mst have been like 11)  he got me hooked on the story and world that spanned multiple planets, even the combat system that required some (basic) strategy and resource management.

After that seeing Final Fantasy and Dragon Warrior on the NES was a HUGE disapointment (I don't know if they came out in that order, but I saw Phantasy Star first, compared to other RPGs of the time, it had a better story, better graphics, as well as better music and 3D dungeons!).
