The reason there is no backwards compatibility is the same reason there was no backwards compatibility for N64, SNES, and GCN for Nintendo.  And to a lesser extent Xbox One, Xbox 360.  It's too expensive.  


N64, SNES, and GCN didn't have backwards compatibility because it would have been absurd to have multiple cartridge docks on them (or, for the GCN, ANY cartridge docks). It had absolutely nothing to do with expenses. In fact, if they had decided to use the same cartridge dock technology, they probably WOULD have made them backwards compatible, judging by their track record with handhelds.
