After reading this article, I was surprised to learn that Sega doesn't have intentions to support the Wii U VC yet.
Considering the disappointing sales of the Sonic brand on the Wii U platform, I'm surprised Sega wouldn't at least consider the Wii U VC as way to catalyze interest not only in Sonic, but it's other games as well. I think they could be pleasantly surprised how well received VC entries like Skies of Arcadia, Shenmue, and Panzer Dragoon could do on the platform.
If Sega wants Sonic and its other franchises to be relevant to another new generation on a new platform, they have to engage the former generation for that to happen. Right now -- that former generation turns to Sonic ports on mobile, special-purpose compilation hardware/software, emulators, original hardware and cartridges/discs, and other gaming platforms to get their classic Sega fix-- but not the Wii U. Frankly, there's nothing to interest them on the Wii U -- so how do you figure they'd consider introducing their children, nieces/nephews, younger brothers/sisters to the Wii U for any of the Sonic Wii U games?
3DS performs marginally better in this regard not only for it's larger user base - but because it at least has GameGear games. But I think it could do even better.
I predict NX launches in 2017 - not 2016
