The reason there is no backwards compatibility is the same reason there was no backwards compatibility for N64, SNES, and GCN for Nintendo.  And to a lesser extent Xbox One, Xbox 360.  It's too expensive.

lol, That's a lame excuse. The play is a blueray player that can play both PS4 discs and Audio discs. How much money would it really cost for them to make it so the PS4 can play.... other blueray discs, compact discs and such. I got a $30 DVD drive and it can run all of those.

The issue is not the medium, it's the architecture. Getting a game coded for the PS3's Cell to run on the standard x86 architecture being used in the PS4 would be a buggy mess. Naughty Dog had to re code TLOU's engine from the ground up to get it working with the PS4. That's how different the two systems are.

Both MS and Sony could have stuck with their 7th gen architectures to allow backwards compatibility, but both had the common sense to move towards x86.

Excluding the same architecture, the only thing Sony could have done would be include PS3-like hardware in every PS4. That, quite obviously, would have been ridiculously expensive :p
