So, to you it is really that the modern world demands more of people. I agree in the sense that we are more moral than our ancestors due to the works of movements our ancestors built.
I would however counter that our perception of our own morality as a species is warped due to the explosion of information and what information is reported. For example, a generation ago there was no internet to tell us what some random person in China did. Now there is and we indulge such stories because fringe elements capture our imagination. If I told you a billion Chinese people today lived their lives in peace and harmony you might even ask "why are you telling me this?" but a select group engages in a depraved or bizarre fashion and our minds cling onto it. Every time I check Facebook soemone is posting some horrible story about violence or cruelty. When I state we actually live in the most peaceful time (based on statistics of violence, crime and war) in human history they cannot believe it.
I understand the desire to compare us to an ideal of behavior, but I also think we should note the progress we have made as a species over the centuries. That said, I will agree we should ask our children to aspire to even greater heights because much left to do.
