have to disagree, I recently got a job at Target about a month ago and i've sold a lot of wii U's and 3DS. "Most" people come in and know what they want to buy. They aren't debating which to get, they either buy the 3DS or the Wii U. I have yet to have a guest sit and decide over one or the other. What I have had is whether they should get let's say a 360 with kinect or a Wii U, but nothing of the sort with 3DS.
